The Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards (or Kids' Choice Awards) is an annual awards ceremony spanning TV, film, music, and pop culture, honoring all of the fan favorites of the year based on votes by kids. The awards are generally held on a Saturday night in March-April. The winners receive a hollow orange blimp with the Nickelodeon logo on it. During the awards' show, celebrities and the audience are splashed with slime. The show is often followed up by the premiere of a new Nickelodeon original series, and/or preceded by a new episode of an already-airing Nickelodeon show.

The first annual Kids' Choice Award was broadcast in 1987, then known as "The Big Ballot". It technically was not an awards ceremony but was shown in four episodes of Rated K For Kids By Kids, a Nickelodeon show with kids reviewing movies. Kids voted for the nominees via paper mail, and the winner's trophy was a golden teleidoscope and the winners accepted their awards via a taped video. After that first year, Nickelodeon brought in producers Alan Goodman, Albie Hecht, and Fred Seibert to refresh the awards ceremony to something akin of MTV's Video Music Awards, bringing in a live audience as well as hosts and celebrity presenters. The trademark "orange blimp/kaleidoscope" shape the award would take shape as was introduced in 1990. From that point forward, the Kids' Choice Awards became one of Nickelodeon's flagship programs, airing every year (except 1993) and each year became bigger than the last, with higher-profile celebrities, musical guests, and tons and tons of slime and stunts.

In 2014, the Kids Choice Awards spun off into Kids' Choice Sports, a ceremony highlighting athletes. And yes, there's slime there as well. The Kids' Choice Sports lasted until 2019 when it was merged back into the KCA's in 2020.

Trivia[]

  • A long version of the Nickelodeon Productions "Nick Lightbulb" logo with a hand reaching up and pulling on a string, revealing the logo, is said to have aired after the first run of Kids' Choice Awards 1996. This rumor has been proven false, however.
  • For unknown reasons, the KCAs once aired on YTV, owned by Corus Entertainment and not ViacomCBS. This might have been due to either YTV being a partner of Nickelodeon at the time, or Corus Entertainment actually owning Nickelodeon Canada at the time due to YTV and Corus Entertainment being Canadian.
  • Most Nickelodeon networks in other countries have/had produced their own localized version of the Kids Choice Awards, such as Kids Choice Awards Mexico (Nickelodeon Latin America), Kids Choice Awards UK (Nickelodeon UK & Ireland), and Meus Premios Nick (Nickelodeon Brazil).
  • Both the award ceremonies in 1989 and 1992 are the only events not to take place in March or April.
